A pair of these same photographs are owned by Deborah L. Crone Treese, great granddaughter of Joseph E. Crone. That pair had been sent to Sam Crone’s father, as indicate by the inscription on its back, “April 1st ’93; Your living son Samuel.” These were made just prior to the Crone’s return to Europe, after more than a year’s stay back in America; and they were probably made in Jersey City—where they may have thought to settle down and where Samuel may have sole his masterpiece, Das Gericht. These photographs should be compared to the anniversary photographs taken on their seventh anniversary in 1892 in the Steiner home.
