This photograph came from a family photograph album (the Hetzel album, similar to the Steiner Album) owned by Dorothea Hetzel Moore and given by Judi Hindes. It is curious and informative that Mary Voegtly Hetzel had one set of photographs of Sam and Sadie and Eliza Voegtly Steiner had a different set, principally, that is, a different Sam Crone. It would seem logical that the clean-shaven Crone, taken in a studio in Munich without a complementary one of Sadie taken there would indicate that it was a betrothal photograph. Furthermore, after Crone grew the full beard, he probably did not return to being clean-shaven, but rather, trimmed the facial hair into the Vandyke that he had most of the rest of his life—though the facial hair is fuller in his self-portrait.<br />
This was probably taken at the time of the marriage or shortly after it.
